Dr. Shamekia Nwafor is a dedicated Therapeutic Optometrist proudly serving Carencro, Lafayette, and the greater Acadiana region. With specialized expertise in ocular disease management, glaucoma care, dry eye treatment, and specialty contact lenses, she offers a wide range of services—including comprehensive eye exams, diabetic eye evaluations, cataract /surgical co-management, and treatment for ocular disorders and infections.
A native of Eunice, Louisiana, Dr. Nwafor graduated Cum Laude from Xavier University of Louisiana with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry in 2007. She went on to earn her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2011. Her clinical training includes extensive externships, where she gained experience in glaucoma management, refractive and cataract surgery, advanced ocular disease, neuro-ocular conditions, and ocular emergencies.
Beyond the exam room, Dr. Nwafor is a passionate advocate for healthcare equity. She currently serves as the Vision Director for the Love Impact Coalition, a nonprofit organization delivering free medical, dental, and vision services to underserved communities around Louisiana. She is also a member of the American Optometric Association, the National Optometric Association, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
When she’s not caring for patients, Dr. Nwafor enjoys spending quality time with her family, traveling, and mentoring young students pursuing higher education.
